AASLE and TASLE: A Legacy of Pan-African Leadership Development

Introduction:

Welcome to the official webpage of TASLE (The African Student Leadership Experience), an initiative that embodies a rich historical connection with AASLE (African American Student Leadership Experience). TASLE and AASLE represent a continuum of excellence in pan-African leadership development, each with its unique origins and a shared commitment to empowering students and professionals across the African continent and the African Diaspora.

The Origins of AASLE:

AASLE was conceived in 2012 by a group of passionate individuals dedicated to fostering excellence in student leadership development. It was not just another student leadership conference; it was an experience meticulously designed to bridge the gap between leadership theory and practice. The inaugural AASLE event took place in the vibrant city of Washington, DC. With a keen focus on experiential learning, AASLE delved into the history, culture, and spirit of the African American community. It attracted the best and the brightest students and professionals from across the United States and the world.

Expanding Horizons:

In 2013, the AASLE experience expanded and introduced the innovative Leadership Experience in Real Time (LEIRT) component. In November 2014, the BELG Leadership Team, responsible for AASLE’s growth and success, unveiled the West Coast Edition of AASLE in Los Angeles, California, offering the same high standards and goals as its East Coast counterpart.

The Birth of TASLE:

TASLE, co-founded by Zephia Bryant, the Founder and CEO of BELG, and Earl-Djehuti Djehuti //Kabbo Erasmus, an indigenous organic academic specializing in High Performance Leadership and Rites of passage at TSIBA Business School, was established based upon the principle, “we stand on the shoulders of giants, and to whom much is given, much is required.” This commitment to honor the legacy of those who came before us and to give back to our communities is a fundamental driving force behind TASLE’s vision.

Shared Values and Commitments:

Both AASLE and TASLE are rooted in shared values such as Pan-Africanism, leadership, faith, excellence, innovation, diversity, and inclusion. These principles guide every aspect of the programs, from pre-conference workshops to post-conference support, ensuring that participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary for effective leadership and community development.

Incorporating Diaspora Perspectives:

One distinctive aspect of TASLE is its commitment to actively engaging and including Diaspora students and professionals. This inclusivity is achieved by incorporating their perspectives and experiences, sharing knowledge and expertise, offering travel grants and scholarships, and fostering networking and cultural exchange opportunities.

The Pan-African Vision:

TASLE’s vision is to create a dynamic and inclusive platform that fosters cross-cultural exchange, builds leadership capacity, and cultivates a sense of pan-African unity and identity among its participants. Together with AASLE, it strives to continue a legacy of excellence in student leadership development, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of African people worldwide.

With an indomitable spirit, we forge ahead, empowering and equipping the next generation that will change the world!
